Report on the Swansea Building Society Dragon 26th Feb 2012
The 5th Dragon of the season saw a change of venue to the Swansea Penlan Club and several “new players” from West Wales entered. 12 players contested the under 15s event, the top group of 4 was a close affair, in the end won by a new player Shankly Ismail, from runner up Peter Morse. The under 11s had 15 entries; the final top group of 4 saw 2 new players (Liam Taylor and Harry Langley) and 2 Dragon regulars (Jack ODuffy and Bethany Brewer). In the end Harry took the win from runner up Liam. To sum up another good completion with plenty of games for the players, many thanks to Dennis Bromage for the organisation and it was great to see TTAW President Betty Gray MBE present certificates and trophies.

Burton 1 star

A huge congratulations to all the West Wales youngsters who participated in the Burton 1 star. Travelling up were Harry Langley (Penlan), Luca Caplin (Mumbles), Lawrence John (Penlan), Tommy Heydon Mumbles), Tatsuki Dale-Thomas (Carmarthen), Steffan Griffiths (Carmarthen), Marc Castro (Penlan) and Anna Hursey (Penlan).

Cadets

Tommy lost out to eventual winner and Welsh Team mate Jac Jenkins in the Semi Final. On Tommy's way to the final he met West Wales team mate Lawrence John on the 2nd the round. Steffan Griffiths managed to get through his group and lost to Sean Drewery from England.

under 13's

Only 2 from West Wales managed to make it through to the knockout stages. Tommy lost out to Amar Rashid 3-1 a player he beat 3-0 in the Cadets. Marc Castro played extremely well but lost out to James Smith in the Quarter final.

Under 11's

In the under 11 event Luca Caplin managed to get the furthest by reaching the Semi final. He lost out to Tong Wah Chan a very good player from England. Harry Langley played out of his skin to reach the quarter final but Tong Wah Chan also got the better of him.

Anna Hursey also competed extremely well throughout the competition very bright youngster for the future.

At the beginning of the day the kids were given the task of working hard throughout the day and to show good sportsmanship. Through the day the organiser commented on how good the players were showing good sportsmanship. As a coach I'm very pleased with all the kids but each now knows the areas they need to focus on.

West Wales Development Camp

Today Carmarthen held Development Camp for all youngsters throughout West Wales. Over 20 youngsters took the opportunity to train for three and half hours with guidance from Aled Howell, Simon Oyler, Judith Whitton and Joanne Simeone. The kids then had a chance to go for a swim following the session. Kids aged 5 up to 14 worked extremely hard and following from the previous camps the standard has greatly improved.

A big thanks to all coaches for their help on the day and well done to all players for their hard work.

In this weeksPremier Division Carmarthen ‘B’ beat Penyrheol ‘A’ 26-10 with Jason Peckhamwinning 9-0 and David Lloyd 9-2. Ammanford ‘A’ defeated Carmarthen‘A’ 29-10, Mike Rees winning 9-1 and Nigel Stopher 9-2. Leaders Penlan ‘B’ hada comfortable 30-4 victory over Cam Gears ‘A’.

In Division OnePenlan ‘H’ gained an exciting 18-17 victory over Carmarthen ‘C’, Tom Heydonwinning 9-1 before teaming up with Alison Cundy in the doubles which they lost3-2 but gained enough games to secure victory, however the defeat pushedCarmarthen into second place.

Penlan ‘G’ beat Carmarthen ‘E’ thanks to Tony Holt winning 9-4.

Division Two saw unbeatenTata Port Talbot ‘B’ narrowly maintain their unbeaten record after beatingPenlan ‘K’ 22-21, the match swung both ways and with the doubles to play thescore stood at 19-19, Kean Pak and Bruce Wen held their nerve to win thedoubles 3-2, the last and deciding game going to deuce. The highlight of thesingles saw Penlan’s Larry Hursey take Kean Pak’s unbeaten record giving himmatch figures of 8-5. Dillwyn Llewelyn ‘A’ maintained their challenge forhonours with a convincing 30-4 victory over Dillwyn Llewelyn ‘B’

Penlan ‘L’ beatDillwyn Llewelyn ‘B’ 20-13 despite Mary Wilkins winning 9-2 for the losers.

The other unbeatenteam Can Gears ‘C’ just maintained their record by narrowly defeating Penlan‘J’ 21-20, Trevor Francis winning 9-5 before teaming up with John Jones to winthe doubles 3-1 to secure the narrowest of victories. Tata Port Talbot ‘B’ beatPenlan ‘L’ 24-10 with Kean Pak winning 9-0 and Martin Jenkins 9-1. Penlan ‘J’beat Tata Port Talbot ‘A’ 21-16 thanks to Lawrence John winning 9-1.

In Division ThreeBlaen-y-Maes ‘A’ moved into second place having played two matches, first theybeat Penlan ‘N’ 22-16 thanks to Tony Averis winning 9-0, they were thennarrowly beaten 16-15 by Penlan ‘S’ for who Matthew Rees won 9-0 before teamingup with Jamie Hill for the doubles, although they lost the doubles 3-1 the gamethey won was enough to secure a narrow victory. Penlan ‘R’ beat Penyrheol ‘C’22-16 with James Lobb and Kallum Clement both winning 9-2.

Half Term Camp

There will be a Half Term Holiday Camp held at Carmarthen Leisure Centre on the 16th of February. The session begins at 12pm and finish at 3:30pm. Children will have the option of going swimming from 3:30pm to 4:14pm. Cost for the day will be £6 that includes swimming.

Welsh Primary School Championships

The Welsh Primary Schools Team Championship was held at WIS on Wednesday 8th February.

Despite the event being held early this year, to enable selection for the British Primary Schools, the support was fantastic with 28 teams being entered from 14 schools.

There was a slightly late start because of the weather and traffic congestion but after the usual settling down period, whilst the teams got used to the unique scoring system, the competition ran smoothly all day.

The morning session comprised of 4 groups of 7 teams playing a 'round robin' format on 3 tables per group.

For the afternoon and 'Finals' session, the winners of the morning groups formed Group 1, the seconds group 2 and so on giving 7 groups of 4, again playing a 'round robin' format on 2 tables per group. This ensured each team played 9 matches in almost continuous play throughout the day.

The results:

Group 7 winners: Bedol B

Group 6 winners: Bedol A

Group 5 winners: Grange C

Group 4 winners: Upper Rhymney C

Group 3 winners: Tavernspite A

Group 2 winners; Frongoch

Each of the above received a Group Winners Certificate.

The Championship winners came from Group 1 with every match being strongly contested.

2 matches finished with a 55-54 result. Grange A Swansea(Jake Simeone/Luca Caplin) just held on to take the title, their 3rd title on the trot, and were presented with the Gold medalions and Certificates. St Mary's Cardiff (Joseph Roberts/Jack O'Duffy) took the silver.

Grange B(Liam Tayler/Sam Bevan took the bronze.

There were a number of recommendations throughout the day for the most sporting team award. It proved very difficult to decide on one. However, the eventual winners were Izabelle Morris and Romy Prosser from the West Park/ Pontrondra Schools.

Feedback at the end of the day was very positive and our target to obtain 36 teams, the hall capacity, should be easily obtainable for next years event.

Thanks to all those team organisers who brought the teams along and assisted during the day. It would just not be possible without your help.

A special thanks to Aled, Joanne, Neil, Dai and Ryan, I certainly couldn't have managed without you.

Hope I haven't missed anyone.

This week saw thequarter finals of the Tudor Jones Cup which produced a thrilling match betweenthird division Penlan ‘R’ and Premier Division leaders Penlan ‘B’. The matchebbed and flowed through the night to finally end in a 10-10 draw, James Lobbwinning 4-2 for the ‘R’ side before teaming up with Kallum Clements to win thedoubles 2-0 and secure a narrow victory, Kallum Clements and Paul Bamsey bothproviding very good support to James. Penlan ‘H’ also beat premierdivision opposition in the form of Ammanford ‘A’ by 11-3, Alison Cundy winning4-0, Thomas Heydon 4-1 and Steven Coope 3-2. Penlan ‘N’ of the third divisionbeat a depleted Penlan ‘G’ 13-9 thanks to Lewis Towell winning 6-2, ShankleyIsmail and Bradley Abraham providing excellent support to Lewis, Tony Holtwinning 5-2 for the losers.

In the PremierDivision Penyrheol ‘A’ and Carmarthen ‘A’fought out an exciting 22-22 draw.

With two games to beplayed Penyrheol held a narrow 18-16 lead, then Neil Hulme and Sven Severynsboth won 3-2 to complete the come back for Carmarthen.

The First Divisionsaw a close game between Carmarthen ‘C’ and Penlan ‘F’ resulting in a 22-17victory for Carmarthen. Penlan started thestronger with Peter Andrews inflicting a rare defeat on the divisions leadingplayer Martyn Fenner, Carmarthen trailed 14-10after six games before storming back to win the last four matches and securethe victory. Rob Wilkins, Alan Griffiths and Martyn Fenner all contributed wellfor Carmarthen while Mark Haymer won 7-4 invain for Penlan. Ammanford ‘B’ moved into second place after defeatingCarmarthen ‘D’ by 27-12, Mike Towell leading the way winning 9-2. Penlan ‘H’beat Carmarthen ‘D’ 27-14 with Thomas Heydonwinning 9-1.

Dragon Report – 15^th January 2012

The New Year meant a new format for the Dragons as the under9 event was reintroduced after an absence of 3 years, good news for the sportof table tennis, and necessary to accommodate the influx of young players.

The under 9s saw 9 entries competing for the trophies onoffer, and there were no surprises on the players who reached the top group. Inthe end Joseph Roberts won the event, from Jack ODuffy who finished runner up.

The under 11s boasted 16 entries. Making the top group afterthe 1^st round were Louie Evans, Cade Short, Joseph Roberts and LydiaJohn. In a hotly contested group, Joseph Roberts managed to win holding offCade Short for a worthy second place.

The under 13s had 11 entries Joseph Roberts again made it intothe top group and looked set for his 3^rd win of the day. However, Jonathan ODuffy had other ideas and took theunder 13s event from Joseph who was runner up.

Ryan Oyler was on top form winning the cadet and junior boy's singles today in Nantymoel. Beth Roberts won the cadet girls singles and Nicole Hall won the junior girls singles.

In the U13 singles Jac Jenkins won the boys event with Charlotte Slye the girl's event.

Shocks of the day saw Liam Winder beat Ryan Oyler in the group and then Ryan Oyler beat Conor Edwards in the semis of the junior boys.

Neil Robinson

Neil Robinson, the former Paralympic Gold medallist and current coach of Team GB’s hopefuls, has been honoured with an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for his services to the sport. Robinson MBE (Member of the British Empire) has been present at every Paralympic Games sinces 1984. He competed in Class 3 events from Paralympic Games stretching from Seoul (1988), Barcelona (‘92), Atlanta (‘96), Sydney (2000), Athens (‘04) and Beijing (‘08).

It was in Barcelona that Robinson achieved his greatest success with a gold medal in the Men’s Team Class 3 event alongside his team-mate James Rowson.

That was one of six medals he has won at the Paralympics to go alongside his three medals from the World Championships (one gold) and eight medals from the European Championships, which included three more golds.

Robinson said of his award: “It makes me feel immensely proud. When we received the news I really got a good warm glow, a real sense of prode that I’d been recognised for something that I have been involved in for so many years.”

After retiring in 2009, Robinson has taken up a new role as an England coach which means a new role could beckon for him at yet another Paralympic Games when London 2012 arrives later this summer.

He is looking forward to the challenge: “My intention now is to channel my skills, knowledge and passion into coaching and help those who are prepared to listen! I have recently been added to the Paralympics GB table tennis coaching team and am looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

He added: “It would be great to be a part of the London 2012 team and hopefully help others achieve what I have and more.”

Freezing conditions didn’t put the players off at the seasons3^rd dragon tournament held on the 18^th of December. 19under 11s arrived at 9am and battled it out for the trophies. However therewere no surprises at this dragon as Jake Simeone from Mumbles TTC won his second under 11dragon with team mate Luca Caplin coming runner up, with Cade Short 3^rd.

In the under 15s the winner was Huw Standen and runner upwas Macauley Morgan.

16 under 13s took part in their event which started at 1pm.The event being wide open as none of the top 3 finishers from Novembers dragonhad entered. A truly exciting event ensured, the final top group saw 3 playerson 2 wins each. Countback was used to separate the top 3, leaving an unluckyNiall Owen 3^rd, Morgan Hams runner up and Elliot Weinberg in 1^stplace.

The dragon format will change in 2012, with a new under 9age group (under 9 years of age on 31^st Aug 2011), therebyreflecting the large numbers of younger players coming through the PrimarySchools initiatives funded by TTAW.

Joe Morris 1930-2011

It is with deep regret that I inform you of Joe’s death.

Joe came to Carmarthen Table Tennis Club in 1990 when he retired with his wife to this area. Since then he has been a major part of the Club attending virtually all sessions he could and has coached tirelessly without asking anything back from those around him. Indeed, he gained great pleasure form ‘being there’ and ‘helping others to learn the game’.

He also had a great impact and a huge help to Aled Howell the Regional Coach. Joe always found the time to help out at any time of the day to coach the youngsters.

Joe lost his wife to cancer about 10 years ago.

Approximately 8 to 10 weeks ago, Joe was taken ill and it was found he had kidney stones. However, just 11 days ago he was rushed back into hospital where he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Joe died peacefully Sunday morning at approximately 5.15 am in his sleep. His family, son Andrew and daughter Janet were with him. Two of his grandchildren were down here as well.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday the 20th of December. Family and friends to meet at St Cain Church Llangain at 10:30 am Tuesday 20th December 2011. This will be followed by a cremation at Llanelli Crematorium at 12 noon.

Our thoughts and condolences go to all his family.

Joe will be sadly missed.

Second place Penlan ‘D’secured a narrow 22-20 victory over Carmarthen ‘B’, with the score level MartinGunn and Matt Lancey won the doubles 3-1 to gain the victory, Jason Peckhamwinning 9-2 for the losers. In another close match Penlan ‘C’ defeated Ammanford‘A’ 21-20, Luke Lyons winning 9-2 before Craig Henton lost the last match 2-3but gained the points to secure the narrow victory for Penlan.

Penlan ‘R’ made the most of their handicap to beat Cam Gears‘B’ 14-8 with Tarrick El-Hosainiand James Lobb both winning 6-2 and Kallum Ramsey giving useful support.

Penlan ‘H’ defeatedPenlan ‘M’ 11-7 thanks to Thomas Heydon winning 6-0 and Stephen Coope 5-3. Penlan ‘B’ secured a bloodless 10-0 victoryover Dillwyn Llewelyn ‘A’ thanks to flawless performances from Ceri James, PaulKarabadak and Neil Page. Tata Port Talbot ‘B’ beat Penyrheol ‘B’ 11-6 with ButWong and Kean Pak both winning 4-1.

Penyrheol ‘A’ recordeda narrow 22-17 victory over Penlan ‘E’, the match was settled when Steve Wilsonand Paul Booth won the doubles 3-1.

In Division One CamGears ‘B’ moved into second place after defeating Carmarthen‘C’ 26-15 thanks to David Davies winning 9-4. However Carmarthen ‘C’ are thenew leaders after their 21-16 victory over Carmarthen ‘D’, Martyn Fennerwinning 9-4 before teaming up with Rob Wilkins to win the final doubles 3-0thus securing the victory.

Division Two saw anexciting match between Penlan ‘J’ and Tata Port Talbot ‘A’ which saw Penlansecure a narrow 19-18 victory, Lawrence John winning 9-0 to level the scores at16 all with the doubles to play, Lawrence then teamed up with Marc Castro towin 3-2 with the last game going to deuce to secure an exciting win for theirteam. Penlan ‘K’ recorded their firstwin of the season when they beat Penlan ‘L’ 24-12 with John Davies winning 8-3,Liam Ford 6-3 and Larry Hursey 7-6, but the best performance of the night wentto Keith Baker who won 9-3 for the losers.

The Spanish Federation and ETTU joined their efforts to host 4th ETTU Coaching Conference in Barcelona from 2nd to 4th December. The list of participants is long and it consists of names of coaches from 11 European countries. Today Penlan played host to a Leaders Award course for a number of new coaches. It was a great success thanks to Penlan, Betty Gray and Dennis Bromage for all their help to organise the course.

Candidates from local Sport Centres along with students studying for their PGCE attended the course.

2 WEST WALES CHAMPS AT DRAGON EVENT

A record entry of 61 young players battled in the main hall for the 6 trophies on offer in the second Dragon of the season. The record entry caused a few problems for the organisers who will have to limit entries for the next Dragon to be held on the 18th of December, so get your entries off early to be sure of a place. The atmosphere in the main hall was electric as dragon players shared the hall with day 2 of the Senior Team Championships. Under 11s and Under 15s got under way bright and early at 9am, entries in both event far exceeding those received for the last Dragon. The larger entry brought some shock results as the winners from all 3 events at the last dragon were swept away by the tide of new talent. The under 11s winner was Jake Simeone (Swansea), whilst the runner up was last under 11s champion Joseph Roberts (Cardiff).

In the Under 15s Jack Fletcher (Bargoed) went one better than last time winning, from runner up Macauley Morgan (Cardiff). 3 of the top finishers in the under 15s have now entered next Sundays Blaenau Gwent Open, and it will be interesting to see the gap between the more established stars and the dragon contenders.

No sooner had the organisers finalised the under 11 and under 15 placings, when 31 under 13 players stormed the organisers desk to be signed in.

Again the tide of new talent swept aside the winners of the last under 13 dragon, no fewer than 5 new players finishing above the last under 13 champion. In the end Steffan Griffiths took the win from James Beadle, the end coming at 6.30pm as staff were clearing the hall!
Still, a great day of table tennis for the new players, lots of matches, lots of fun, certificates for all, and trophies for the lucky (but talented) few.

Disability Day

On the 8th of November a Table Tennis Disability Day took part in both Llanelli and Carmarthen. This allowed youngsters from all over Carmarthenshire to take part in table tennis for the very first time. Over 90 youngsters attended the event held by Table Tennis Association Wales in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council, Sport Wales, Llanelli Table Tennis Club, Carmarthen Table Tennis Club and Wales Disabled Table Tennis Academy run by Head Coach Jim Munkley. Before each session the kids had a taster of how table tennis can be played from Development Coach Aled Howell, European Medallist and GB Squad player Paul Karabardak plus the Academy members from the Welsh Squad. After the quick exhibition everyone got a chance to participate in a number of games set up on a number of tables.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who attended and made it a great success. Pictures will be put up shortly.

Burton and Uxbridge 1star

Lydia & Lawrence John played in the Burton & Uxbridge 1star tournament on the 6th of November. Lydia had a very impressive runners up position in the under 11s girl category and finished 3rd behind Imogen Barber the etta no5. Lydia also managed to take a set off Sophie Jenkins in the Cadets.

Lawrence lost in quarter final of cadet after going through from group stages losing narrowly 3-2. Lawrence competed in the junior tournament in afternoon. He managed to beat the group winner but didn't qualify for quarter finals due to count back. Great experience for both.

This week saw thefirst round of the Tudor Jones Cup which produced some exciting matches.

The youngsters ofPenlan ‘N’ used their start to good effect by narrowly defeating Penlan ‘L’12-10, the match ended in a draw when Shankly Ismail won the last game to givehim match figures of 5-2 along with good support from his team of Lewis Towelland Bradley Abraham.

Shankly and Lewisthen produced an impressive display to win the doubles 2-0 to take their sideinto the next round. Penlan ‘H’ defeated Carmarthen‘E’ 12-10 in another closely fought match which was decided when Alison Cundywon the last game 2-0. Penlan ‘G’ narrowly defeated Tata Port Talbot ‘A’ 12-8,the match was level with two games to play when Tony Holt and Colin Towell bothwon their games 2-0. In another close match Ammanford ‘B’ beat Llanelli 13-11,Syd Bryce winning the last game 2-1 giving him match figures of 6-2. Cam Gears‘C’ beat a weakened Carmarthen ‘C’ 11-8, but despite playing with a man shortCarmarthen took the match to the last game which Trevor Francis won 2-0 to edgePenlan into the next round. Third division Penlan ‘M’ secured an excellent 15-5victory over premier division Penlan ‘A’ with Harry Langley winning 6-1, PeterMorse 5-2 and Matthew Francis 4-2. Penlan ‘R’ also from division three beatpremier side Penlan ‘E’ 14-8 with Tarrick El-Hosaini winning 5-2, James Lobb5-3 and Kallum Ramsey 4-3.

This course is suitable for anyone wanting to learn about the sport of table tennis for the first time. It is mainly a practical course with some theory which provides an introduction to starter table tennis skills. The aims of the course are to: Enable participants to organise safe, enjoyable and purposeful table tennis activities; Inform participants about the basic skills required at the starter level; Inform participants about further opportunities to take part in table tennis in the community as officials, umpires and coaches through further Coach Education courses provided by the TTAW.

West Wales Table Tennis combined with a charity called 'Fit for Fun' on Tuesday. The day was aimed at getting kids active in a number of different sports. It was a great day for kids from all ages to try our sport but we also picked up a number of volunteers who would like to get involved in coaching. The children were in the age ranges of 0-4yrs, 4-7yrs & 8-12yrs all gave table tennis a go for the very first time.

There was a huge turnout of children that were divided into groups who all benfited from an hour of table tennis with Aled Howell and Stan Eastwood.

A big thanks to Stan Eastwood for his help on the day.

England South West taught our young Welsh players a little lesson yesterday down in Okehampton.

Stefan Jeczalik, Jon Bisp, Matthew Francis, Thomas Heydon, Harry Langley, Jack Cole Soffi Jenkins & Charlotte Slye all tried their best but we were unable to stop the ever progressing region.

A number of players being selected from West Wales and proves we have much to work on.

Great start for all West Wales junior teams in the recent Junior Team Championship of Wales. All players contributed hugely to their teams with a number of nail biting finishes. Swansea had a great start, currently top of the table so lets keep it up boys and get Swansea back in the top division where they belong. Carmarthen added another team in Division 3 this year. Carmarthen A currently sit second behind a very strong Wrexham team. Well done to the youngsters and carry it on throughout the season.

Great start to the High Potential squad this evening. With a new venue and a number of new faces it was a great start to the season. Potential stars aged from 5 up to 13 with big thanks to Jason Peckham and Dennis Bromage for helping out. Well done to everyone for the first session keep it up throughout the season. This Wednesday we will also see the first ever Carmarthen Regional Squad. It will be run by Aled Howell and Jason Peckham so great things ahead.

Well done to both Carmarthen teams and the Swansea team this weekend also in the Team Championship of Wales. Further information will be put up soon.

Dragon

The 1^st Dragon of the season took place on Sunday9^th of October in the main hall at the National Centre Sophia Gardens.As usual many were playing in their first tournament and it was a real thrillfor these new players to be playing in the same hall as the best juniors in Wales who werecontesting Junior Team Championships. The under 11s group with 10 entries gotunderway at 9am together with the older under 15s. It was great to see the newplayers and parents and some impressive playing followed. Whitchurch Academyplayers coached by Simon Oyler dominated the under 15s event with Hugh Standensecuring the win in a close battle against newcomer and surprise of the under15s Jack Fletcher. The under 11s saw players from all over the south regiontaking part, just missing out on a trophy finishing 3^rd was CadeShort, runner up was Luca Caplin and winner was Joseph Roberts. A specialmention goes to highest finishing female player Lydia John who finished in 4^thplace overall.

The under 13s started as usual at 1pm and a few keen under11 entrants had a go at the older age group, thereby making the most of theirtrip to Cardiff.Incredibly 3 players claimed top honours all on 4 wins each in the final group.The organisers had to revert to counting sets and the final top 3 were; 3^rdJohn Clarke, 2^nd Joseph Roberts and the winner was Elliot Weinberg.This result shows how close the competition is the Dragons and the importanceof trying to win every point. The next Dragon will take place on Sunday 20^thof November 2011, again in the main hall at the National Centre so be sure to get your entry formssent off early.

Martin was the eventual winner of the Band 3 beating Scotsman Nathan Courtney in the final. Martin picked up the silver medal in the Band 2 event. Penyrheol Lunch Club

Last Thursday Penyrheol Lunch club was open for the first time. With over 30 kids from year 7 up to year 10 attended the club. Some have a small bit of experience of the game with others that have never picked up a bat. The club will be run by West Wales Director, Dennis Bromage. The club will be run week one an open session for everyone with week 2 based only for girls. A few selected will represent the school in the Swansea School competition. The kids will also have the opportunity to join Penyrheol table tennis club that is also based in the leisure centre/school on Tuesday nights starting at 7pm to 10pm. The club is open to everyone with all equipment provided and run by Dennis Bromage.

Summer Camp Programme Ended

The Summer Camps have come to an end and yesterday (Thursday 25th) we held the Carmarthen Summer Camp tournament. Over the summer around 50 kids from all over West Wales have made there way to Carmarthen for the 4 hour long training sessions. Some new players and experienced players had the chance to train with each other and gain the opportunity of receiving some tips off experienced coaches from around West Wales. A big thank you goes to Dennis Bromage, Joe Morris, Judith Whitton, David Short, Jason Peckham, Sharlene Williams, Dave Treharn and Roy Towell. In the tournament it was clear to see the improvement in a number of the kids game. Its been a great Summer and now hopefully all the kids are ready to start the season with a bang.

The Summer tournament was a round robin between all the players. The overall results had to go on count back with Marc Castro, Lawrence John and Paul Joules only losing the one match. Due to count back the overall winner was Paul Joules of Carmarthen Club.

From elite level to the very grassroots, the Coach of the Year Awards recognise the very best of Welsh sport.

Anyone can nominate their favorite coach or volunteer and there are numerous different categories to choose from.

This year’s event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 16th November 2011, 12pm, at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff.

After an inspirational celebration of coaching and volunteering in Wales in 2010, we now need your help to make 2011 even bigger and better.

We need your help to achieve this:

· Please make your colleagues and partners aware that the nomination process for 2011 is now open. Nomination information can be found at: http://www.sportwales.org.uk/news--events/news--events/events-calendar/coach-of-the-year-awards-2011-.aspx.

· We would like you to submit details of winners from your own sports awards to our national competition.

StMellons Camp

Some of the talented youngsters from Carmarthen and Swansea took the trip up to StMellons, Cardiff for a training session run by South Wales Development Coach Simon Oyler. This gave some of our up and coming stars from West Wales to train with the current top Welsh players like Jac Jenkins, Callum Evans, Dan O'Connell, Yongbo Zhang and Ryan Oyler. Steffan Griffiths (Carmarthen), Tatsuki Williams (Carmarthen), Lawrence John (Swansea) and Marc Castro (Swansea) learnt a great deal of the current Welsh players. On the day the 4 kids also took the opportunity to watch Belgium team PW Diest train with the Welsh Squad. The 4 boys also had a quick multiball session with National Coach Ryan Jenkins. It was a great day for the youngsters from West Wales not only to train with some top players but to watch how some of the best train.

Development day in Cardiff

The first TTAW development day took place today in Cardiff with an age range from 5 years old up to 13 years old taking part.

With the groups split into 3 categories of 5-7yrs, 8-11 yrs and 12-14yrs respectively. Each group had older Welsh International and club coaches practicing with them.

Steffan Griffiths of Carmarthen and Harry Langley of Penlan attended the day. This was a great chance for the West Wales youngesters to pay against those who are part of the Welsh squad. Coach Scott Johnston praised the boys on there hard work throughout the day so well done boys keep up the good work.

Ryan Oyler, Conor Edwards, Dayna Pierce, Nicole Hall, Rachel Cuss, Dan O'Connell and Steve Fawkes gave up their Sunday morning to help with the session which was great and shows their respect in helping younger players in Wales.

Players came from Rhondda, Cardiff, Carmarthen, Swansea, Ael y Bryn, Blaenavon, Pontypridd, Merthyr & Bridgend

Scott Johnston, Steve Jenkins and Nathan Thomas were there as coaches along with myself.

This will now be a monthly event and letters will go out shortly for the August development day.

British Schools

Team Wales travelled to Lilleshall National Centre to play the British Schools Championships from Friday 24th-26th June.

Wales won a number of medals, One of which was Gold won by the Welsh Young Talent of Charlotte Carey who held her nerves and fought back from 2-1 and 10-7 down to Yolanda King to take the 4th set 12-10 and pushed on to win a 5th set thriller to clinch the title for the second year in a row.

In the senior Girls final another Welsh representative was Angharad Phillips coached by Aled Howell. Angharad met her twin sister Megan in the semis then Emily Bates of England in the Finals. On this occasion it was not Angharad walking away with the gold but it was a very good weekend for the twins from North Wales. Angharad walked away with a silver and her sister a bronze while they both received a silver in the team event.

Summer Development Camps

QE High in Carmarthen held a try a new sport day. Amongst a number of sports on the day Table Tennis proved again to be very popular amongst the youngsters. With around 30 to 35 kids attending a session every hour aged between 11 to 15 it was great to see so much table tennis being played. Throughout the day over 175 kids gave table tennis a go for the first time. A big thank you to Scott Johnson and Joe Morris for coming down to help to make the day a very successful one.

Olympic Day

Over 200 kids gave table tennis a go for the first time today in Glan y Mor school. Children aged 10 to 11 had the opportunity to give table tennis a go for the first time. Primary schools in the area not only had the opportunity to try Table Tennis for the first time but to play against an Olympian. Jazz Carlin Team GB swimmer attended the table tennis session getting involved with the kids for her first attempt at the sport. Jazz attended this years Commonwealth games in India and returned home with a Silver and a Bronze in the pool. She is currently number 5 in the world in her events and was one of 6 nominees for BBC Cymru Sport Personality of the Year.

Rhydygors v Cathays

Rhydygors School took part in a freindly match against Cathays High School in Cardiff.

This was held on Thursday 9th June at Cathays High School and this proved to be a great match up and some great sportsmanship was shown.

This proved to be a very close match with Lars Calford (Carmarthenshire Schools Champion) and Justin Cole to be to strong for Cathays youngsters, but there were somebattles between the younger contenders. Cathays senior players played the two senior players of Carmarthan and proved to be slightly to strong winning all their matches.

The match finished 13-11 in favour of Cathays Academy, A very close game and very entertaining match with both parties enjoying every second of the challenge.

This was great for the kids and hopefully we will see a home fixture being played in the future.

Gone but never forgotten

On the 4th and 5th of June Lawrence John (Penlan), Harry Langley (Penlan), Thomas Heydon (Mumbles) and Niall Owen (Carmarthen) were selected to attend a training camp held by former Welsh coach Stephen Gertsen. This was a great chance for our youngsters to gain some excellent training with a number of players across the border. On the Saturday the boys attended the Development day with around 27 participants. During the day they played a friendly match against the Regional squad.

4 boys from the East were Ethan Walsh, Anthony Close, Jordan Ingles and James Knudson. They secured a 7-3 victory overall against out Welsh youngsters.

In the a afternoon a tournament was held with 7 groups consisting of 3 players and 1 group with 4 players. The top 2 went through to the main draw with the others going into a consolation event. The tournament although very competitive was played in a great spirit. The semi finals of the main draw saw 2 Welsh v 2 English with Ethan Walsh knocking out number one seed Thomas Heydon and Lawrence John beating number 2 seed Anthony Close to quite fittingly set up a Wales v England finale. 9 year old Ethan played superbly in the final with aggresive table tennis taking it 2-0 against Lawrence. Well to Lawrence on his first trip away.

The boys then attended the under 14's Regional squad on the Sunday.

Well done to all the boys on their hard word over the weekend.

A big thank you goes to Stephen Gertsen for his hard work on organising the event and inviting kids from his former stomping ground.

Carmarthen Training Camp

Another successful training camp held in Carmarthen Leisure Centre on the 2nd of June. With 28 kids attending and 8 coaches the day could not have gone any better. With a similar set up to the previous camp we had a robot, multiball and 3 practice partners. The coaches were Jason Peckham (ex Welsh international), Vicky Skeats (ex Welsh International), Judith Witton (ex Welsh International), Simon Oyler (South Wales Development Coach), Dennis Bromage (Welsh Vets International and West Wales Director), Joe Morris (The Godfather), David Short (Bridgend Coach), Roy Towell (Penlan coach and brough through a number of welsh internationals) and Aled Howell.

The kids came from all over West and South Wales as far as Cardiff, Ferndale, Brdigend, Swansea and up to Pembrokeshire. This gave the prefect chance for the local kids from Carmarthen and Ammanford to mix there practice partners up. Thank you to everyone who helped put.

Leaders Award Llanelli

The first TTAW Leaders course in Llanelli was launched yesterday to allow young coaches, youth workers and teachers the chance to gain the knowledge needed to use table tennis in their weekly sessions.

Barry Robertson tutored the course with Bernie Carter leading on the child protection section. Aled, Simon and Ryan, who shadowed Barry on the day, are now able to tutor their own workshops throughout South Wales in the future which will help more coaches and leaders understand the basics of table tennis.

This was a great success with more being planned for next season. There will be some held in Carmarthen, Llanelli and Swansea.

Ireland champion John Murphy (pictured above) has confirmed his entry last night and adds to an already exciting list. Yongbo Zhang, the’ Ruabon Dragon’ will be there as will Ryan ‘Ruby Walsh’ Flood. Adding to the mix is Ryan Owen (welsh vice Champion), Dean ‘Grand Prix band king’ Cundy and Nathan ‘Cardiff City’ Thomas!
With a qualifier from Wales also attending and a wildcard from England’s top 10 there will be a great selection to support.

Carmarthen Development Camp

After the success of the previous training camp held in Carmarthen there will be another held on the 2nd of June. Again a mini bus full of players from Cardiff will be down.

Llanelli table tennis club is up and running once again. The opening night proved very successful with a number of the present faces returning to loosen the arms.

Llanelli club will be running every Tuesday at Llanelli Leisure Centre:

5pm to 6:30pm for under 12s
6:30pm to 8pm for Juniors
7pm to 10pm for Seniors

There will be a Table Tennis Leaders Awards Course running from Llanelli Leisure centre on the 21st of May. The course is perfect for those looking to help out in clubs, lunch clubs, school clubs, community clubs or just wants some general knowledge of the sport.

The course will start at 2pm and run for roughly 3 hours.

Swansea League

As the season draws to an end the Premier Division is set to be settled when the top two sides Penlan ‘D’ and Penlan ‘A’ lock horns next weekend, a win for the ‘D’ side will guarantee them the title. At the other end of the table Carmarthen ‘A’ look like joining Penlan ‘E’ in the relegation places.

In Division One Cam/Cabin ‘B’ finished their season with a 23-18 victory over Ammanford ‘B’ with Gareth Evans winning 9-2, however they were beaten 20-19 by Cam/Cabin ‘A’ despite Gareth Evans winning 9-3. These two matches see Cam/Cabin ‘B’ currently top of the division but Penlan ‘G’ with three games to play look certain to be crowned champions. Third place Cam/Cabin ‘A’ defeated Port Talbot ‘A’ 23-13 with Doug Smith winning 9-2. Llanelli recorded two victories, firstly they beat Port Talbot ‘A’ 28-8, Tony Tappin winning 9-0 and Alan Pattle 9-3, they then defeated Penlan ‘H’ 23-16 despite John Jones winning 9-4 for the losers.

A very important match took place in Division Two between the two Carmarthen sides which saw the ‘E’ team take a large step towards the title by defeating the ‘F’ side 25-13, the win was set up by Andrew Joules with an impressive 9-1 victory, Simon Packer won 8-4 and Paul Joules added important games by winning 6-5. This leaves the two sides second and third in the table.

Dillwyn Llewelyn ‘B’ finished their season on a high note by beating Penyrheol ‘C’ 20-14, Mary Wilkins leading the way winning 8-3, Graham Rees winning 9-2 for the losers.

In Division Three second place Penlan ‘N’ finished their season in style by defeating Friends of the Young Disabled ‘D’ 30-2 with Lawrence John winning 9-0, Mar and Marc Castro both winning 9-1. This leaves third place Ty Gwyn an up hill task in their last two matches to finish in second place.

West Wales Development Camp

The West Wales Development Camp today (21st April) was a huge success. Children from Merthyr, Cardiff, Pembrokshire, Swansea and Carmarthen took part in a great training camp today held in Carmarthen. The camp was run by Aled Howell but a big thank you goes to all the coaches that attended. A big thank you to Joe Morris, Jason Peckham, Simon Oyler, Dennis Bromage and Vicky Skeats for making it s successful day. The kids had a great day so there will be more camps coming up.

The session was run from 11am to 3pm with the children playing against the robot, multiball and chop.

In the Premier Division Penlan ‘A’ kept in contention with a 26-11 victory over third place Penlan ‘C’, Ceri James winning 9-1. In the relegation battle Carmarthen ‘B’ beat Carmarthen ‘A’ 22-18 thanks to Aled Rhys Howell winning 9-0.

Division One has new leaders in the form of Penlan ‘G’ after they recorded three victories, first they defeated Port Talbot ‘A’ 26-10 with Max Clews winning 9-2, they then beat Carmarthen ‘D’ 26-9, Jonathon Francis winning 9-0, and finally they beat Ammanford ‘B’ 22-12 thanks to Jonathon Francis winning 9-2. Third place Cam/Cabin ‘A’ beat Friends of the Young Disabled ‘A’ 26-17 with Doug Smith winning 9-2. At the bottom of the division Port Talbot ‘A’ defeated Penlan ‘H’ 27-12, Martin Jenkins winning 9-1.

In Division Two Dillwyn Llewelyn ‘A’ are the new leaders after recording two good victories, They defeated Dillwyn Llewelyn ‘B’ 27-10 with Nick Couling winning 9-0, they then beat Penlan ‘K’ 24-16 despite John Davies winning 9-4 for the losers. Penlan ‘L’ moved into second place after defeating Port Talbot ‘B’ 29-10. Penlan ‘K’ beat Port Talbot ‘A’ 23-15 with John Davies winning 9-1 and Peter Langley 9-3. Penlan ‘J’ moved off the bottom after defeating Penyrheol ‘C’ 20-13 despite Graham Rees winning 9-2 for the losers.

The top of the table clash in Division Three saw leaders Port Talbot ‘D’ beat Ty Gwyn 20-16 to become champions, the victory was sealed when Butt Wong and Kean Pac won the doubles 3-0 Kean also won 9-1. Penlan ‘N’ moved into second place after recording two victories, first they defeated Friends of the Young Disabled ‘C’ 25-8 with Lawrence John winning 9-0 they then defeated Penlan ‘M’ 26-12, Lawrence John winning 9-1 and Mar Castro 8-4. Friends of the Young Disabled ‘B’ narrowly defeated Penlan ‘M’ 20-18, the match was decided when Ian Crumbie and Chris Donovan won the doubles 3-2, Matthew Francis won 9-1 for the losers.

There will be a leaders award held on the 21st of May. This is a chance for all community coaches, youngsters, parents, anyone to learn a few things about the sport and become a qualified coach. The course costs £15 and will last roughly 3 hours. This will be run by Welsh coach Barry Roberston. Welsh Primary Schools Championships

Well done to all teams who took part in the Welsh Primary School Championship. The event doubled in size from last year with an entry of 24. In the final group playing for 1st to 4th place we had an amazing three Grange (Swansea) teams and one Ysgol y Model (Carmarthen). it was up to the Model boys to divide the Swansea boys from a clean sweep of the titles. With some very close matches Grange A managed to win the event with Model coming in 2nd, Grange B 3rd and Grange C 3rd.

Well done to you all and a big thank you to Dennis Bromage for organising the event.

In this weeks Premier Division Penlan ‘B’ finished their season with a flourish in defeating Penlan ‘E’ 29-11 with Josh Jenkins winning 9-2 and Craig Henton 9-3. Ammanford ‘A’ beat Penyrheol ‘A’ 25-13, Nigel Stopher winning 9-1. Carmarthen ‘C’ gained a narrow 22-18 victory over Carmarthen ‘A’ thanks to David Lloyd winning 9-4. Leaders Penlan ‘D’ beat Penlan ‘C’
25-12 with Dean Cundy winning 9-2. Second place Penlan ‘A’ kept up the pressure on the leaders with an easy 30-1 victory over Carmarthen ‘A’.
In Division One Penlan ‘G’ maintained their challenge with a 27-10 victory over Port Talbot ‘A’ with Jonathon Francis winning 9-0 and Ben Mora 9-2, they then defeated Llanelli 28-9, Jonathon Francis, Max Clews and Ben Mora all winning 9-2. Leaders Cam/Cabin ‘B’ narrowly defeated Friends of the Young Disabled ‘A’ 20-18 while second place Cam/Cabin ‘A’ beat Penyrheol ‘B’ 29-12 with Doug Smith winning 9-2 and Randel Sims 9-4. Ammanford fought out an exciting 15-15 draw with Penlan ‘F’, Syd Bryce winning 9-0.
Division Two has new leaders in the form of Carmarthen ‘F’ after they defeated Penlan ‘K’ 26-13, Rob Clayton winning 9-1 and John Finnemore 9-4. Dillwyn Llewelyn ‘A’ gained a narrow 18-17 victory over Jerusalem Baptist Church, the match was decided when Andrew James and Dave Archer won the doubles 3-0, Jeff Wood winning 9-1 for the losers. Penlan ‘K’ defeated Penlan ‘J’ 25-12 with John Davies winning 9-2 and Frank Smallwood 7-4.
Division Three leaders Port Talbot ‘D’ increased their lead with three fine victories, they beat Friends of the Young Disabled ‘D’ 29-3, Carmarthen ‘G’ 29-7 and Friends of the Young Disabled ‘B’ 30-9. Penlan ‘N’ moved into second place after defeating Friends of the Young Disabled ‘B’ 30-1. Penyrheol ‘D’ beat Carmarthen ‘G’ 20-14 thanks to Gerald King who won 9-0.

This weeks Premier Division saw third place Penlan ‘C’ easily defeat Ammanford ‘A’ 26-13 with Martin Gunn and Matt Lancey both winning 9-1. Second place Penlan ‘A’ also recorded a clear cut victory over Penlan ‘B’ by 29-8 with Ceri James winning 9-1 and Neil Page 9-4.
Leaders Penlan ‘D’ easily accounted for Carmarthen ‘B’ 30-4 while Penyrheol ‘A’ defeated bottom side Penlan ‘E’ 30-4.
In Division One the leaders Cam/Cabin ‘B’ enjoyed two very good wins, they defeated Penlan ‘H’ 29-10 with Graham Butler and Gareth Evans both winning 9-2, they then beat Port Talbot ‘A’ 26-12, Gareth Evans winning 9-1 and Martin Evans 9-3. Cam/Cabin ‘A’ moved into second place after defeating Penlan ‘F’ 25-10 with Doug Smith winning 9-0. Penlan ‘F’ gained a narrow 20-19 victory over Friends of the Young Disabled ‘A’, the match was decided when Tony Holt won the last game 3-2 to seal the victory, Adam Morgan winning 9-2 for the losers.
Division Two leaders Carmarthen ‘E’ beat Penyrheol ‘C’ 26-10 with Andrew Joules winning 9-1 and Simon Packer 9-3. Carmarthen ‘F’ maintained their challenge by defeating Penlan ‘L’ 22-12, John Finnemore winning 7-3. Fourth place Dillwyn Llewelyn ‘A’ maintained their challenge by defeating second place Penlan ‘L’ 28-12, Nick Couling and Dave Archer both winning 9-2.
Division Three leaders Port Talbot ‘D’ narrowly beat third place Penlan ‘N’ 19-15, the victory was secured when Kean Pac and But Wong won the doubles 3-0, Kean Pac winning 9-0.

British Primary Schools

Well done to all those who represented Wales over the weekend. It was a great experience for those who gained their first cap for Wales. The Welsh A Boys team consisting of Thomas Heydon, Mathew Francis, Jac Jenkins and Jack Cole finished joint 4th.

In both Wales B squads for boys and girls and representatives from West Wales. In the Boys B squad Harry Langley, Niall Owen and Toby Johnson who played very well to earn their first cap. Toby Johnson also earned a great win over David Quinn of Jersey. Although the team lost a number of matches 10-0 its does not reflect just how well they played with a number of close matches.

Bethan Lewis from Carmarthen also gained her first cap and had great wins over Emma Rhind (Scotland) and Daisy Kershaw (Guernsey)

Thomas Heydon won the consolation event with wins over fellow country man Tobby Johnson, Jack Ives (Guernsey), Sol Bower (Guernsey) and then played Ben Christian (Guernsey) in the final winning 3-0. Well done to all of you!!

West Wales in Okehampton

Some of West Wales youngsters took the opportunity to travel to Okehampton in Devon to train with South West England Regional Squad. Selected from West Wales were Harry Langley (Penlan), Thomas Heydon (Penlan), Bethan Lewis (Carmarthen), Tatsuki (Carmarthen) and Niall Owen (Carmarthen). The training camp gave the youngsters a chance not only to train with some of South West Englands finest youngsters but to take part in a full on training camp. The training started at 10am to 12:30pm then 1:15pm to 4pm with breaks inbetween. This was a prefect practice session for the youngsters leading up to the British Primary Schools that take place in Cardiff this weekend (1st of April to the 3rd). Good luck to you! A big thank you also goes to Swansea League who helped fund the opportunity for the kids to train in England.
